In last week’s Tarot of Songwriting, I talked a little about the uncanny in film. There was a time in my life when it was my only criteria for choosing a movie. Linear narrative did very little for me. It’s part of my interest in moments of truth being more fulfilling than arcs of constructed narrative - or at least it was; as I get older, I find myself becoming more interested in long arcs of narrative, for obvious reasons. In songwriting, I have found myself drawn to vignettes of uncanny imagery; they are powerful, and I would say songwriting allows for injections of the uncanny amongst linear, familiar narrative in a way that is perhaps more difficult to achieve in film. Maybe more on that another time - until then, here’s a list of some uncanny moments in film I have enjoyed*:
